inari region, lapland

Inari and Saariselkä have a rich history. People have lived on the shores of Lake Inari and the Ivalo River since the last Ice Age. Inari is the heartland of the Sámi people and their culture. Siida, the museum in Inari Village (a bit over 1h drive away) is a treasure trove for anything Sámi-related and is also one of the best nature museums in Finland. The area is well known for its rich gold deposits, and prospectors still come to pan for gold each year. We even host the national gold panning championships in our area at Tankavaara (30 minute drive away). The site is also home to the only gold museum in Finland.
